Celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day

Oki! Tansi! Hello!

On Monday June 21st, we celebrated National Indigenous Peoples day here at Niitsitapi Learning Centre. This celebration included traditional drumming with Ms. Katie and a visit to the tipi/moyis to learn more about the Blackfoot culture with Ms. Crystal.

It was an important day, both for the children and the staff members and we feel blessed to have had the opportunity to learn so much.

EDC Bee Inquiry

Oki! Tansi! Hello!

Last week, we completed our study of bees. Children were extremely interested in looking at pictures and learning about bees. We talked about how important bees are, and even though they may seem scary, bees are actually just scared of us. Even this week outside, you can hear children say "remember, don't bug the bees!". It is amazing how compassionate these young people are, and how much they love to learn new things. Here are some photos of the art work we completed to honour bees.

We started by using recycled paper and egg cartons to paint to create bee hives.

Our first bees were created out of recycled cardboard. We practiced weaving using yarn to create the yellow and black colouring of the bees.

For our other bee project, we put out a variety of material like paper, googly eyes, newspaper, glue and scissors. We also had pictures of bees for the children to reference. Children created their own unique bees.

Upcoming Dates:
No EDC: Friday June 25th
Last day of School for EDC-Grade 2: Tuesday June 29th

EDC Update: June 15th, 2021

 Oki, Tansi, Hello!

We have been very busy here in EDC, continuing to learn, grow and develop so many great skills.

Last week, we completed a beautiful butterfly project. This project took few days, but the children showed great perseverance and attention to detail when completing.

First, we used a mixture of black paint and white glue and outlined our butterfly templates. This took great patience, and helped our fine motor skill development.

We had to wait a day for our outlines to dry. Then we were able to paint our butterflies. We chose from a variety of colours and painted inside of our black outlines. Again, this took great patience, attention to detail and helped strengthen our fine motor development.

We think they are absolutely beautiful!!!

Just a few reminders:
* Transportation Registration deadline has been extended to June 20th. If you need support, please contact Charmaine in the front office.
*Last day of school is Tuesday June 29th: Starting next week, we will be sending home items every day with your child to keep at home (indoor shoes, school work etc. )

Have a great week!
